Don't Be Eeyore
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
Why do we let Satan win over our mood?
We have so much to be thankful for as Christians and yet many times we are quick to be negative. I know because I happen to have been an expert at this.
Growing up my family called me Eeyore, after the donkey in Winnie-the-Pooh, because I was always negative. I expected the worst to happen to me and couldn’t even watch a ball game on TV without immediately declaring my team the losing team when they got down a few points.
Unfortunately, I was the guy on the team with a long face on the bench frustrated we were losing and not the guy with a rally cap on and trying to get the team pumped up.
In the last two years or so, this has been an area I have intentionally asked God to help me with and by God’s grace made major changes.
No one likes to be around a droopy-faced Eeyore all the time and as a Christian why would we even want to stay that way? God has given us so much to rejoice in! As a child of God, we have so many privileges and promises to cling to! Yes, people hurt us and life isn’t always fair, but God never fails us and He never forsakes us.
Refuse to assume the worst-case scenario and find the good. Decide to make the best of a situation instead of doing nothing and complaining about your situation.
People don’t control your moods, you do. Don’t give toxic people that power over you.
If you find yourself always seeing the negative, you need what the Bible calls a “renewed mind.” Immerse yourself in the Word of God and claim His promises as more than a “Sunday pick-me-up.” Daily claim His Word as true by faith and act on what God says.
If you are a child of God, you have the Holy Spirit living inside of you and cultivating the fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, meekness, faith, temperance) in your life.
Your mood is a choice. A choice to yield to your flesh and be filled with selfishness, frustration, worry, anger, and so on, or a choice to humble yourself and allow the Holy Spirit to produce the fruit mentioned above in your life despite your circumstances.
Start this week. No matter what comes your way….
Don’t let Satan win your mood.
