A Godly Friend
What are the qualities of a good friend?
A quick google search shares the world’s qualities of a good friend that has some value, but the Bible shows us a better example of a friend in Jonathan and David.
These two were unlikely friends. Jonathan was the rightful heir to the throne, but he knew he would never be crowned. God had stripped Saul’s family from the throne and declared David the next king.
This announcement angered Saul and led him on a chase to kill David, but Jonathan remained a godly friend. In one instance, with David hiding out from Saul in some woods with 400 rough men overcome with debt, distress, and discontentment, Jonathan snuck from his dad’s company to encourage David.
Jonathan encouraged David not to fear because God protected him.
He also reminded David of God’s promise to give him the kingdom.
Then, just before he left, he reminded David of one last thing. His own support.
The Bible summarizes that meeting by stating that Jonathan strengthened his (David’s) hand in God.
Jonathan risked his life to visit David and ministered to David without one ounce of jealousy.
Do we strengthen our friends by reminding them of God’s goodness and promises?
And David saw that Saul was come out to seek his life: and David was in the wilderness of Ziph in a wood. And Jonathan Saul’s son arose, and went to David into the wood, and strengthened his hand in God.
1 Samuel 23:15-16
